Moving? Here’s How To Let Things GO

I was speaking to a friend who is moving, and since I did so not long ago, she asked my advice on how to prepare. First, I explained a spiritual concept I applied to letting go in preparation to make the big move.

Vairagya is the sanskrit word for letting go, or relinquishing attachment to what actions we’ve already taken directly or indirectly. It means that by letting go of the past, we create space for right now, and empower our future intentions. Each year nature provides an excellent reminder because she shows us that everything changes and comes to its natural end. The leaves fall, nights get longer, days shorter. There is an inevitable ending to the year where we look back and recognize all that we got done and all that we didn’t and have to decide what we want to let go of.

When you move, you begin by scaling back, paring down what you have.

Before you begin make time for the ritual of releasing applying the KonMari method by Marie Kondo. She is the author of the New York Times best-selling book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” This methodology applied with great care and respect will make the next phase easier.

My best advice:

(1) First, in your best boxes pack the things you absolutely love and want to take with you

(2) Choose those things that you know won’t serve you in your next home and let them go (don’t deliberate, just decide with heart).

Try not to grip at all of it for that will make the process more difficult and by releasing some things you create space for what you really want that fits your new life in your new home.

This is an art form.  The practice of discernment is mindfulness, knowing your heart well enough to choose wisely.

On the mat we practice releasing all that is not necessary to the pose. We find that the letting go is what bouyes us up. We regain our energy and our clarity when we let go of all the distractions in our minds to focus on what is really important. The key is to choose wisely.

A simple exercise we can practice today, whether we are moving or not, is take 1 minute each day to focus on releasing stale thoughts, and clear the way for new ideas to emerge.
