The Importance of Community in Yoga

by Silvia Mordini Truth: My favorite part of yoga is community. The coming together of humans of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, ages, interests to share the same experience. That’s why I go back everyday as a teacher and as a student. And science tells us that being in a healthy community is good for us. The vibration of positive minded people raises our vibrational frequency. This shared joy elevates our spirits and is talked about in Yoga Sutra Chapter 2.33 Pratipaksha Bhavana. Essentially the sutras spell out that if we are imbalanced mentally, physically, or emotionally then we are not living our true nature which is joy. Therefore engaging with others trying to think happy thoughts helps us create happy thoughts as well. Positive energy creates and attracts more positive…

Find PASSION For Your Life!

Did you wake up today loving your life? Are you doing things because you love to do them or because you feel like you have to do them? What percentage of the time would you say you live like that? Well, if you are spending more of your time doing stuff because you feel like you have to instead of wanting to,then you’ve discovered a simple formula for misery. “The purpose of life is a life with purpose.”  -The Monk Who Sold his Ferrari.   Then the first step is to ask yourself and write out the answer to “what are you passionate about?” What sparks enthusiasm so much so that you can feel it in your body, whether it’s a smile on your face or sitting up a little taller in your seat. This helps…

The Power of Being Magnetic: How I Teach Yoga

“In a plain piece of metal, all the molecules are in chaos facing every which way. A magnet is a similar piece of metal in which all the molecules are perfectly aligned – the north poles facing one way, and the south poles facing in the opposite direction. Because of this alignment, the magnet gains the power to attract and hold other objects. If you stroke the ordinary metal and the magnet together in one direction only, the magnet will align all the molecules in the plain metal with itself, causing a second magnet to emerge. The power to attract and hold has been transmitted from one to the other, while amazingly enough the initial magnet retains its full strength. As we align our energies this way through regulating our…

7 Tips for New Yoga Teachers

By Silvia Mordini Back when I was a new teacher, none of the social media measurements had existed to pressure competition and comparison with other teachers. The second-guessing, worry and comparison of only adds stress to the very people trying to share this healing art. Anticipating that your next Yelp review will be a dud, or that your performance will be a disappointment is so disheartening. New teachers don’t deserve this pressure. Here are seven psychological and emotional pitfalls that stand in the way of genuine success in teaching yoga and how to overcome them: 1. Competition Stop torturing yourself by comparing yourself to other teachers status updates and fancy asana photos. Put an end to trolling Facebook and Instagram for reasons to be offended. Look to these outlets for…

Canang What? Canang Sari

There is nothing like the captivating island of Bali. The first time I was there, I was totally blown away by its people, culture, food and lifestyle. Ubud is in the middle of nature; surrounded by rice terraces and thick jungle. As the sun rises at Villa Tanah Shanti, the jungle becomes alive with birds and insects singing you back to this earthly realm. The air is filled with magic and you’ll learn early on that spirituality is an integral piece of Balinese culture. You won’t go far without seeing a small square or round palm leaf offering filled with flowers and rice, Canang Sari, on the streets. The phrase “Canang Sari” is derived from the Balinese words sari means essence and canang means a small palm-leaf basket. Canang Sari is the symbol of gratitude and…

Water Purification Ceremony

As a profound tool for healing, water purification ceremonies are held periodically throughout training at the most well-known and sacred temples on the entire island. These ceremonies give trainees a deeper understanding of the magical mysteries of Balinese spirituality that represent healing, love, and transformation. After putting on your sarong gifted to you by alchemy of yoga, you will be escorted for a guided tour of the peaceful and ancient site, where you will learn the history of these sacred grounds. Then the ceremony will be conducted by a Mangku (Balinese Priest). While sitting in meditation the priest will prepare some holy water in a vase with flowers and incense while chanting mantras in ancient Sanskrit. Following the mantras, you will be invited to receive a holy water cleansing as…

A Traditional Balinese Dinner!

One of our favorites evenings throughout training is visiting Agung’s ancestral home to learn about the meaning behind the layout and overall design of a traditional Balinese home. You’ll also learn how to make traditional Balinese offerings! We’ll enjoy an incredibly generous dinner buffet with a private traditional Balinese dance performance – a dance-drama that represent stories expressed through elegant movements detailed all the way into the gestures of eyes, fingers, head and hands. These mudras are learned early as Balinese children are taught to dance with their hands even before they can walk! In December 2015 UNESCO recognized 3 forms of Balinese Dance as “intangible cultural heritage.” This is sacred moving meditation at its finest. In this dance tradition the practice is an offering to ask protection from the gods and…
