Complain-Free Diet

By Silvia Mordini Gluten-free, Lactose-free, Low-Carb, Fat-Free, MSG-Free. For a long while I spent more time on my physical diet and didn’t give much consideration to my mental diet. I could tell you why not to eat “empty” calories but I did not understand the mental equivalent of empty calories, otherwise known as complaining. Science shows that our thoughts impact us physically. Even the causes of stress eating and increases in cortisol, the stress hormone are related to the habits of our thoughts. And like the bad habits we can fall into in our eating patterns, the same can be said for mental habits like complaining. The good news is that we can unlearn both. We have no more right to put our discordant states of mind into the lives…

The Alchemy of Yoga Program: Key Questions Answered

4 KEY QUESTIONS I GET ASKED ABOUT ALCHEMY PROGRAM: 1. What Kind of Yoga do we Teach? We prepare students to teach intelligent vinyasa mindfully sequenced with an emphasis on breath, meditation, poses and a philosophical theme, which serves as the intention of the class. We are not just teachers of poses, we are inspiration leaders. We are Happiness Ambassadors who together are committed to #TeachPeace. 2. What are the Practicum Requirement for Graduation and Certification? A key requirement for certification from our program is practice teaching culminating in a “teach out” to our tribe using the Grounding Flow Alchemy Class Plan. We practice this together and break it down for you to teach from learning the adjustments and techniques you need to adapt to all levels of students. 3….

Find Compassion for All Yogis

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” Dalai Lama I’ve practiced yoga for over 15 years. I’ve taught more than 12,000 hours and since my very first teacher training, my goal has always been to teach what I practice and to practice what I teach. Through the years of practicing with different teachers, it has become clear to me that creating a compassionate yoga community requires that we take responsibility for ourselves. After all, our actions, thoughts and words impact the connections we have with those around us: just as positive energy creates more positive energy, the inverse is also true. Our bigger American Yoga Kula is strong in love but we diminish our power by publicly degrading other styles…

SPRING Forward into New Beginnings

By Silvia Mordini Spring is quickly coming, starting March 20, 2019. On this day in the Northern Hemisphere, we have 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. Winter’s shadow moves on. Even so, a lingering bit of heaviness may remain, like the spring jacket you wear or the tiredness you feel in the air. It’s okay to acknowledge the darkness of Winter and see it as the fertilizer making our souls more fertile for the new beginnings of Spring. This seasonal transition serves as a reminder that we can only make new beginnings to the extent we appreciate the endings in our lives. To make a big change and begin again isn’t always popular. As you change yourself, your energy towards those around you changes, and if they…

How to Stop Pushing and Pulling

By Silvia Mordini Do you ever get tired of living like you’re in a constant tug-o-war? This one thing creates more tension than anything else. Today I am wishing you a day of effortless effort where you are not feeling pulled or pushed by others nor where you are the one doing the pushing or pulling. I know from experience every time you push your partner, he or she will pull back. When you try to pull at them to stay longer, they will then push away. It’s the win-lose scenario of dualism. Imagine how strong a person has to be that when you push them they don’t react to your pushing. All while at the same time they are careful not to overcompensate for the initial push in order…

How To Form Healthy Habits That Will Last

by Silvia Mordini We all form habits as we go through life. When we realize that we are creatures of habit and that those very habits often keep us stuck in patterns we can finally begin to break unhealthy habits, only then can true spiritual growth begin. In order to change, we have to change something. When you look at what you want for your life direction, you may find that something has to change from the way you’ve been living. By consciously understanding which habits no longer serve you, then you are able to realize your best transformation. This is the basis of why a cleanse serves your best health. It renews your awareness of what you’re doing and not doing. If we want to develop healthier habits like…

The Importance of Community in Yoga

by Silvia Mordini Truth: My favorite part of yoga is community. The coming together of humans of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, ages, interests to share the same experience. That’s why I go back everyday as a teacher and as a student. And science tells us that being in a healthy community is good for us. The vibration of positive minded people raises our vibrational frequency. This shared joy elevates our spirits and is talked about in Yoga Sutra Chapter 2.33 Pratipaksha Bhavana. Essentially the sutras spell out that if we are imbalanced mentally, physically, or emotionally then we are not living our true nature which is joy. Therefore engaging with others trying to think happy thoughts helps us create happy thoughts as well. Positive energy creates and attracts more positive…

How To NOT Pick A Yoga Teacher Training

by Silvia Mordini What if I said to you that I wanted to get eye surgery? Lasik, to be precise. What advice would you have for me? Here’s what I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t say to me: Find the Cheapest doctor possible. Find the Cheapest facility (hospital) possible. Find the least qualified doctor possible. Find the newest doctor possible. Just go where it’s closest. Do it yourself. Read how to do it online. Then why oh why would you choose a Personal Development Program such as a Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) impacting your Soul and Spirit in this manner? Sort of like Lasik surgery, this is not one of those times to bargain shop and cheap it out. Make a decision based key criteria about the school and be honest…

How to Face Your Fears, and Grow Up in the Process

By Silvia Mordini “If you begin to face your fears, something bittersweet is going to happen to you: You’ll grow up.”–Martha Beck- Finding Your Own North Star I know this much, in order to fully enjoy life you must renounce your fear and anxiety. I spent a long time being terribly afraid (afraid of not being perfect, afraid of what others might think, afraid of failing, afraid of succeeding, afraid someone I loved would leave me, afraid if I had to do my life right, afraid of really being happy, afraid of being myself). This is now way to live. I don’t want that for you. Rinpoche talks about how we all have a soft spot and that fear and fear like responses such as worry or resentment occur because we…
