How To Heal Yourself

By Silvia Mordini Healing begins when we relax and surrender. Our old emotional paradigms and unhealthy mental resistance known as samskaras melt away when we surrender. A spiritual alchemy resets the internal dialogue to one of trusting the forward flow of grace. It states that when we surrender to our yoga practice, we offer ourselves to the practice itself, trusting that by letting go of the outcome we can find ultimate freedom. (Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2, verse 7). When we have a deep reaction surrounding surrender, it is often because our emotions are tied up into old stories about giving up. But this is a very different thing. In this context, surrender is what allows life to offer her best to us. As Paolo Coelho writes in The Alchemist, “the…

Feed Your Passion and Find Your Purpose

By Silvia Mordini Are you doing things because you love to do them, or because you feel like you have to do them? What percentage of the time would you say? If you are spending more of your time doing stuff because you feel like you have to instead of wanting to, then this is a simple formula for misery. “The purpose of life is a life with purpose.” -The Monk Who Sold his Ferrari. It’s easy to get caught up living life the way other people want you to, thereby losing your purpose for living. When that happens, we also lose our passion. Fundamentally, we are wired to have passion for our purpose. It’s no surprise that what fires us up is aligned with that which fulfills us. JOURNALING:…

How To Find Balance Through Meditation

By Silvia Mordini Each day, I ask myself “How do I maintain balance in order to live my best day ever?” As much as I try to stay balanced, I have learned that I can easily lose it if I stop paying attention to it. Chanting, or using rhythmic speaking or singing of words and sounds is a great way to find and maintain balance. Om Namah Shivaya is my favorite mantras to practice. During and after singing this song I feel a quiet but energized sense of equilibrium. Om Namah Shivaya mantra uses the universal elements that govern each chakra: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. This song allows the chakras to better utilize the fundamental elements that exist in the chakra. When we repeat this mantra, we bring…

How To Form Healthy Habits That Will Last

by Silvia Mordini We all form habits as we go through life. When we realize that we are creatures of habit and that those very habits often keep us stuck in patterns we can finally begin to break unhealthy habits, only then can true spiritual growth begin. In order to change, we have to change something. When you look at what you want for your life direction, you may find that something has to change from the way you’ve been living. By consciously understanding which habits no longer serve you, then you are able to realize your best transformation. This is the basis of why a cleanse serves your best health. It renews your awareness of what you’re doing and not doing. If we want to develop healthier habits like…

Why Fake It? It’s Okay To Not Have Your Sh*t Together

By Silvia Mordini In school, you can try to fake knowing more than you do but when it comes time for the test the truth comes out by way of your grade. In bed you can try to fake feeling more than you do, even orgasm, but when it comes down to it you’re only fooling yourself if you think your partner can’t tell. In teaching yoga, you can show up, pretending to be “ultra spiritual” ala JP Sears and act the part of a yoga teacher, even faking happiness and serenity, but eventually one of two things will happen to you: 1. You’ll fall apart or give up from the exhaustion of pretending 2. Your students will call you out as being a Poser. You can’t keep faking you…

How To Surrender: Accepting Life As It Is, And Being Happy With It

by Silvia Mordini There is this spiritual alchemy where we move beyond wanting life to be different and begin to feel the surrender that allows what is being offered. We practice ishvara pranidhana as we trust the universal intelligence that hugs us from all directions to know what it’s doing. And once we find this trust we begin to believe that beauty and goodness are within us flowing nonstop and there is no reason to stop this flow for its natural current is to align with the current of grace that is everywhere outside us. Beauty becomes our way of life. Happiness becomes our natural spiritual alchemy when we practice ishvara pranidhana. You see when we come to the mat we are like the Alchemist in his laboratory mixing ingredients….

Stress Management 101: How To Handle Your Stress

by Silvia Mordini Have you ever noticed a low level of anxiety constantly gnawing away inside you? Do you find yourself clenching your jaw, grinding your teeth, fidgeting, seeking meaningless distraction, anything just to handle the stress or get away from the tension you feel just being you? Yoga calls this DUKHA. It means suffering, imbalance, despair, anguish, anxiety, irritation, uncertainty and more. You get the idea. If you feel Dukha you are not alone. Despite the fact we have more comforts and material possessions, more freedom and more mobility than any people in modern history Americans are awash in Dukha. As George Carlin put it, “the paradox of our time in history is we have more….” See below. Dukkha impacts us on all levels: 1. Physiologically – arises from…

Life is Full of Setbacks – How to Remove the Roadblocks to Your Happiness

by Silvia Mordini Dukha, the bad stuff, happens to everyone. We must stop feeding our stress phobia thinking we are trying to eradicate the bad stuff (fear, distrust, suffering, armoring, rigidity, contraction, defensiveness, aggressiveness, resentment.) The real obstacle to spiritual practice is thinking that to be happy we must be stress-free. Obstacles are not the problem. Life is full of setbacks, traffic jams, heartbreaks and roadblocks. It is our reaction and hostaging of energy that is the real block to our happiness. Learning how to stress successfully is the answer to staying Zen. Dukkha impacts us on all levels: 1. Physiologically – arises from overtaxing our nervous systems, constant fight or flight response. 2. Psychologically –this comes from a feeling of separateness. We withdraw to a point where we experience…

Morning Mantra: There Is No Need For Struggle

by Silvia Mordini “Through practice, I’ve come to see that the deepest source of my misery is not wanting things to be the way they are. Not wanting myself to be the way I am. Not wanting the world to be the way it is. Not wanting others to be the way they are. Whenever I’m suffering, I find this war with reality to be at the heart of the problem.” ~ Stephen Cope Instant peace and calmness came over me while I practiced reciting this mantra to myself: “There is no need to struggle.” Ask yourself right now, “Can I live with what life is offering me?” When we find neutrality in our mind, we let go of judgment about what is happening. We no longer fight against the…
