Why Yoga Works for Better Sleep and Less Anxiety

Better sleep has been touted for years as one of the benefits of yoga. So today we learn about Yoga for Sleep and improved emotional well-being since there is a link between inability to sleep and anxiety. What is Anxiety? It is how we manage stress. What is Stress? The opposite of relaxation. One of the most important things you can learn from a yoga class is that your thoughts have the ability to affect your overall contentment and health. During the deep relaxation pose (corpse pose), one systematically relaxes every part of the body, even suggesting that the brain itself is “relaxed.” During conscious relaxation, thoughts are experienced more as an energy, which is associated with the brain than as the sum total of who we are. We have…

Take A Gratitude Walk

Today’s focus is Gratitude for our feet that walk about 7,500 steps a day! According to WikiAnswers: “The average moderately active person takes about 7,500 steps a day. Assuming every day the person walks, an eighty year old person who began walking at one year of age, would have taken 216,262,500 steps in their lifetime. An average person, with an average stride, living to this age of 80 will walk about 108,131 miles.” I learned how to really appreciate every step while trekking the rivers of Costa Rica. It’s not easy. If it rains in the mountains, the water down by the ocean is unclear and muddy. But if the mountains stay dry, you’re in for a stroll in the beautiful blue waters. Regardless of the path and the water…

Journaling Prompts for Peace, Happiness and Focus

Having a clear vision of your day saves 40% of your time and makes you more productive. Instead of simply charging into your day going in a million directions take time to get clear on what you’ll do to look after yourself. I’ve put together a simple worksheet checklist for you to use. This begins with a “brain dump” that will clear your mind to focus on other things. Whether it’s the small distracting thoughts that can take our attention or bigger, more challenging issues that can at times hijack our thoughts, this will make mental space. The most common brain dump exercise you’ve probably heard of are Julia Cameron’s “morning pages” or “stream of consciousness journaling.” In it’s most basic form, this is simply waking up, grabbing your journal,…

Why Yoga Works

By Silvia Mordini Yoga literally means union, this is one of the first things we hear our teachers tell us when we start practicing yoga. And even before that we’ve already been bombarded with the cliché mind, body, spirit. But in real people terms what is the connection between the poses (asanas), breathing (pranayama), philosophy, energy and Western psychology? Formally David Frawley, author of Yoga and Ayurveda says “Yogic methods cover the entire field of our existence – from the physical, sensory, emotional, mental, and spiritual to the highest Self-realization. It includes all methods of higher evolution in humanity – physical postures, ethical postures, breath control, sensory methods, affirmations and visualizations, prayer and mantra, and complex meditative disciplines. Yoga understands the nature and interrelationships of the physical, subtle and formless…

Complain-Free Diet

By Silvia Mordini Gluten-free, Lactose-free, Low-Carb, Fat-Free, MSG-Free. For a long while I spent more time on my physical diet and didn’t give much consideration to my mental diet. I could tell you why not to eat “empty” calories but I did not understand the mental equivalent of empty calories, otherwise known as complaining. Science shows that our thoughts impact us physically. Even the causes of stress eating and increases in cortisol, the stress hormone are related to the habits of our thoughts. And like the bad habits we can fall into in our eating patterns, the same can be said for mental habits like complaining. The good news is that we can unlearn both. We have no more right to put our discordant states of mind into the lives…

What is your emotional and mental health worth?

Super Namaste! Silvia here, Alchemy of Yoga Founder. Let’s get really real for a moment. What’s your emotional and mental health worth to you? If you had to put a dollar figure on this. What would it be? Of all the things you invest time and money in where are YOU on that list? Sadly, for most of us we prioritize the health and well-being of our car as more important than ourselves. That doesn’t make sense to me. Does it to you? As always I’m going to tell you the truth. This is not a rehearsal for a better life. THIS IS IT. You are not in a trial run. You’re not going to be able to trade in your body for a newer model. This one is it….

7 Benefits of Handstands

By Silvia Mordini Handstands are part of the Inversion family of poses. Inversions revitalize, detoxify, and nourish one’s entire system. Some of their benefits include reversing the effects of gravity on the body, improving circulation, and tonifying the digestive and eliminative systems. I highly encourage attending a Handstand workshop in your area to demystify what actions are necessary to enjoy a safe inverted practice. What will you learn? Through a thorough exploration of preparatory poses that strengthen the abdomen, increase flexibility of the spine and create stability in the arms and shoulder girdles, you will open specific areas of the body needed to safely practice inversions like handstands. A handstand workshop will provide you with many practical tools for starting to leave fear behind and let in the joy and…

How to Stop Pushing and Pulling

By Silvia Mordini Do you ever get tired of living like you’re in a constant tug-o-war? This one thing creates more tension than anything else. Today I am wishing you a day of effortless effort where you are not feeling pulled or pushed by others nor where you are the one doing the pushing or pulling. I know from experience every time you push your partner, he or she will pull back. When you try to pull at them to stay longer, they will then push away. It’s the win-lose scenario of dualism. Imagine how strong a person has to be that when you push them they don’t react to your pushing. All while at the same time they are careful not to overcompensate for the initial push in order…
