Why Yoga Works

By Silvia Mordini Yoga literally means union, this is one of the first things we hear our teachers tell us when we start practicing yoga. And even before that we’ve already been bombarded with the cliché mind, body, spirit. But in real people terms what is the connection between the poses (asanas), breathing (pranayama), philosophy, energy and Western psychology? Formally David Frawley, author of Yoga and Ayurveda says “Yogic methods cover the entire field of our existence – from the physical, sensory, emotional, mental, and spiritual to the highest Self-realization. It includes all methods of higher evolution in humanity – physical postures, ethical postures, breath control, sensory methods, affirmations and visualizations, prayer and mantra, and complex meditative disciplines. Yoga understands the nature and interrelationships of the physical, subtle and formless…

Complain-Free Diet

By Silvia Mordini Gluten-free, Lactose-free, Low-Carb, Fat-Free, MSG-Free. For a long while I spent more time on my physical diet and didn’t give much consideration to my mental diet. I could tell you why not to eat “empty” calories but I did not understand the mental equivalent of empty calories, otherwise known as complaining. Science shows that our thoughts impact us physically. Even the causes of stress eating and increases in cortisol, the stress hormone are related to the habits of our thoughts. And like the bad habits we can fall into in our eating patterns, the same can be said for mental habits like complaining. The good news is that we can unlearn both. We have no more right to put our discordant states of mind into the lives…

What is your emotional and mental health worth?

Super Namaste! Silvia here, Alchemy of Yoga Founder. Let’s get really real for a moment. What’s your emotional and mental health worth to you? If you had to put a dollar figure on this. What would it be? Of all the things you invest time and money in where are YOU on that list? Sadly, for most of us we prioritize the health and well-being of our car as more important than ourselves. That doesn’t make sense to me. Does it to you? As always I’m going to tell you the truth. This is not a rehearsal for a better life. THIS IS IT. You are not in a trial run. You’re not going to be able to trade in your body for a newer model. This one is it….

7 Benefits of Handstands

By Silvia Mordini Handstands are part of the Inversion family of poses. Inversions revitalize, detoxify, and nourish one’s entire system. Some of their benefits include reversing the effects of gravity on the body, improving circulation, and tonifying the digestive and eliminative systems. I highly encourage attending a Handstand workshop in your area to demystify what actions are necessary to enjoy a safe inverted practice. What will you learn? Through a thorough exploration of preparatory poses that strengthen the abdomen, increase flexibility of the spine and create stability in the arms and shoulder girdles, you will open specific areas of the body needed to safely practice inversions like handstands. A handstand workshop will provide you with many practical tools for starting to leave fear behind and let in the joy and…

How to Stop Pushing and Pulling

By Silvia Mordini Do you ever get tired of living like you’re in a constant tug-o-war? This one thing creates more tension than anything else. Today I am wishing you a day of effortless effort where you are not feeling pulled or pushed by others nor where you are the one doing the pushing or pulling. I know from experience every time you push your partner, he or she will pull back. When you try to pull at them to stay longer, they will then push away. It’s the win-lose scenario of dualism. Imagine how strong a person has to be that when you push them they don’t react to your pushing. All while at the same time they are careful not to overcompensate for the initial push in order…

The Yoga of Relationships: Getting Along with Others

By Silvia Mordini Human beings are tribal in nature. It is part of our social evolution. “What tribes are, is a very simple concept that goes back 50 million years. And it’s something that people have wanted forever,” says Seth Godin in his book Tribes. We are raised in community and from the very start of our lives we have other humans around us. Nature mimics this in how animals live in packs, schools, flocks, gaggles, herds, and prides. Yet for as natural as it is to live in tribes, we often struggle in getting along with others. Although it’s one of the first things we learn in kindergarten – to share and play in the same sandbox – it’s not always easy. We all have that difficult person in…

How To Escape Scarcity Mentality, and Believe that You Are Enough

By Silvia Mordini I often meditate on trusting that I will have enough. Enough of what? Well, enough courage, enough inner strength, enough wisdom, enough energy, enough love, enough happiness, enough peace and yes, enough money. When life becomes intense, the prism of mental scarcity often grows and distorts your view. You start to think that you are going to run out. This feels real. However you cannot attract abundance if you think this way. Abundance and Scarcity are mutually exclusive energies. Do you suffer from what Stephen Covey describes as a scarcity mentality? Do you frequently have feelings of jealousy? Do you often compare with your colleagues, friends or family? Do you constantly measure what you have? Do you have any sort of loss aversion? Let’s find out how…

Come Home To Yourself

By Silvia Mordini When we’re at home with ourselves, we’re fully embodied. We feel grounded, peaceful and self-accepting. We’re less likely to worry. We’re not overly concerned about what anybody else thinks or says that isn’t loving, kind or helpful. Yoga is a way of coming home to this place. Yoga serves us as a “respite” from many of the concerns and responsibilities that can await us at home or work. Studies show us that little respites reduce stress, and help us approach life with a clear mind and a more open heart. Connecting with my breath, moving through skin, I traverse muscle and bone and wash up on the shores of my own being. –Julie Rappaport, 365 Yoga Daily Meditations To come “home” to yourself, first be aware of…
