Stress Management 101: How To Handle Your Stress

by Silvia Mordini Have you ever noticed a low level of anxiety constantly gnawing away inside you? Do you find yourself clenching your jaw, grinding your teeth, fidgeting, seeking meaningless distraction, anything just to handle the stress or get away from the tension you feel just being you? Yoga calls this DUKHA. It means suffering, imbalance, despair, anguish, anxiety, irritation, uncertainty and more. You get the idea. If you feel Dukha you are not alone. Despite the fact we have more comforts and material possessions, more freedom and more mobility than any people in modern history Americans are awash in Dukha. As George Carlin put it, “the paradox of our time in history is we have more….” See below. Dukkha impacts us on all levels: 1. Physiologically – arises from…

How Does Yoga Transform the Mind?

Yoga Inspires Change. Over the last 20 years of spiritual practice I can honestly say the single most important Yogic lesson I have learned is: To Create a Change we have to Change Something. The result of our choices is constantly creating new unique personal alchemies. This is how yoga transforms us. It is about taking the personal growth we experience on the mat into making the changes we want in our lives. Anytime you want to transform and move beyond your limitations, to me, this is the Alchemy of Yoga. We all form habits as we go through life. Yoga teaches us that even our good habits keep us from growing spiritually. This is because habits are by definition an attachment to a pattern of behavior, or a form…

Give Yourself A New Kind Of Time Out

We all need to take a time out. Every single one of us. A retreat is just that, a retreat from the daily grind in order to get clear on what you like about your life and what could be working better, or realizing those things you’ve outgrown. And some retreats include way more than just yoga such as life coaching exercises where you’ll learn practical tools to apply to your life right away while others include off the mat fun like surfing, kayaking, hiking and more. A Yoga Retreat is the perfect time in a beautiful place to do this mental detox.Just like we have to clean out our closets now and again (whether we want to or not) we need to take time to mentally declutter as well. It…

Moving? Here’s How To Let Things GO

I was speaking to a friend who is moving, and since I did so not long ago, she asked my advice on how to prepare. First, I explained a spiritual concept I applied to letting go in preparation to make the big move. Vairagya is the sanskrit word for letting go, or relinquishing attachment to what actions we’ve already taken directly or indirectly. It means that by letting go of the past, we create space for right now, and empower our future intentions. Each year nature provides an excellent reminder because she shows us that everything changes and comes to its natural end. The leaves fall, nights get longer, days shorter. There is an inevitable ending to the year where we look back and recognize all that we got done…

Wandering Woman: Why Busy Women Should Travel

Here are a few reasons why I believe women SHOULD TRAVEL alone. 1. For this time away live without compromise. As women we generally compromise in hundreds of small ways every day. This week listen fully to your own heart. You can sleep in, go shopping, eat whenever you want. Do everything or do nothing. Go for it! You get to spend your time exactly as you want to. 2. You will feel totally FREE! Most of the time we live according to what everyone else wants us to do. You only have your own schedule to concern yourself with, no one else to manage. You have no else’s expectations to manage. There are no pulls or pushes on your choices. 3. You will learn to be more present. (Putting…

I remember my first yoga class at a community center. I didn’t know anybody, and I’m pretty sure nobody else knew anyone either. I remember thinking “this is weird,” because there were people of all different ages and backgrounds, with me being the youngest. To be honest, if we hadn’t come together in yoga class, I’m not sure any of us would have met to be friends. But here we were, creating a safe little tribe. And we did become friends, even across generational gaps and socio-economic boundaries. You see, my favorite part of yoga has nothing to do with poses or breathing. Truth is my favorite part of yoga is community. The coming together of humans of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, ages, interests to share the same experience. That’s…

Radical Self Care: It’s OKAY to Put Yourself First

When is the most important moment? NOW Who is the most important person? THE ONE YOU’RE WITH, WHICH IS ALWAYS YOU. What is the most important thing to do? TO CARE Yoga is time where we get back in touch with caring about ourselves. Self-care is essential to a productive, peaceful life. Developing an attitude of self-care means seeing yourself as the author and expert on your life story. Authoring one’s own life assumes some measure of authority and requires appreciating yourself. Sadly deep down a lot of us don’t. Or we don’t think we are worth the time loving self-care requires. Being on the mat breathing in our poses literally helps us learn about ourselves as we alchemize a cocophony of emotion, feeling and thought. It is incredible what…

How To Love Yourself

Will taking care of others ever lead you to taking better care of yourself? No. Of course not. You have to take care of yourself to receive from yourself. Otherwise its robbing Peter to pay Paul. Giving love to yourself is important. Why not make the commitment to loving yourself a priority starting today? You deserve it. Let’s get started. First, write a list of all the things you can do as forms of self-care. Secondly, follow through with one or two things each week for a year. Set the momentum in motion and establish your energy as deserving to receive comfort and self-care and the universe will support you in this effort. Sally Kempton refers to these as “meta commitments”, our most important commitments to promoting the quality of…

Alchemy of Balance: Using Chakras and Chanting

Each day, I ask myself “How do I maintain balance in order to live my best day ever?” As much as I try to stay balanced, I have learned that I can easily lose it. Balance may be easy to find, but it is hard to sustain. This is because we are the only ones who can do the inner work of maintaining it. Francis Braceland writes, “We can be sure that the greatest hope for maintaining equilibrium in the face of any situation rests within ourselves.” So how do we find and maintain balance? I have discovered two tools: Chakras & Chant. Chakras The Chakras, which are the seven main energy centers in the body that receive, absorb and distribute life energies are a natural starting place. The Chakras…
